Tips on Saving Fuel

Drive at an Economical Speed:
A vehicle’s air resistance increases four times when the vehicle speed is doubled, and nine times when the vehicle speed is tripled. Drive a vehicle at a moderate speed. Keep your speed under 80 km/h for efficient fuel consumption.

Shift Up Earlier & Shift down Slightly Later:
For the best fuel economy, the highest gear you can use is the most economical. Shift from low to high gear as soon as you can.

The following provides suggested vehicle speeds for shifting into a higher gear. These suggestions relate to fuel economy and vehicle performance.

Gear Change Speed (Km/h)
1st to 2nd 25
2nd to 3rd 40
3rd to 4th 65
4th to 5th 75

Racing Engine Is Wasteful:
Eliminating unnecessary acceleration. Rapid acceleration uses as much as 50% more fuel. Increase speed gradually to avoid burning-up of unnecessary fuel.

Minimum Idling:
Stop useless idling. If you stop for more than 5 minutes, turn off the engine.

Use Your Air Conditioner with Moderation:
Remember that the engine drives the air-conditioner compressor. Use it only when necessary, and improve your fuel economy.

Reconsider Your Route:
The best route is the shortest one, but consider the type of roads, too. Short runs and stop-and-go driving consumes more fuel.
GOODTIMELY MAINTENANCE ENSURES GOOD FUEL ECONOMY

Is the Air Pressure of the Tires Appropriate?
When the air pressure is low, rolling resistance increases, worsening the fuel economy. Note that the rolling resistance of radial tires is smaller than that of bias tires.

Is the Coolant Temperature Appropriate?
The engine wears out more quickly and the fuel consumption becomes worse, when the coolant temperature of the cooling water is too low.

Are the Fuel Injection timing & the Valve Clearance Correct?
If the fuel injection timing is slightly delayed and the valve clearance is larger than the specified, the engine power decreases and the fuel economy worsens. As they are periodical checking items, ensure they are checked without fail.

Isn’t the Air Filter Element Clogged?
If the air filter element is clogged, the engine power decreases and the fuel economy worsens because of the reduction in intake airflow.

Is the Engine Oil/Fuel Grade Appropriate?
Use recommended oil/fuel grade only. This can increase engine protection & improve performance.

Do You Experience Clutch Slippage & Brake Drag?
Clutch slippage reduces engine power transmitted, worsening the fuel economy. In addition, brake drag quickly wears out the brake lining, leading to waste of fuel.
